Wish I was there . .
My passport is ready and I can be packed in minutes.

Her eyes were closed, but the tears were glistening on her cheeks, and I think, in a moment more, they were in my eyes as well. It never really died, then-- the soul that can suffer so excruciatingly and so interminably; it withers to the outward eye only; like that strange moss which can lie on a dusty shelf half a century and yet, if placed in water, grows green again.
-Willa Cather
A Wagner Matinee

Hello Hexe,

your beautiful photo inspired me to write a haiku for you:

the enchanted spot
wooden table, two benches
beckoning to you

I remember that story. It was extremely moving. Made me have a whole new appreciation of Wagner.

Such a beautiful post!
I love Willa Cather, but haven't read this story. It's not on my shelves either. Gotta run over and put it on my wishlist at amazon. Thank you!

Olivia - Thank your for visiting and your lovely haiku. The photo is from a visit to New Hampshire last year at this time of year and I am certainly feeling like I am being "beckoned" as I miss the change of season.

Naechstehaltestelle - I had read Cather back in college and have kept her novels on my shelves. I needed a realism author for a class this week and found this Wagner short story. I about cried when I read it; of course, only a handful of my students had the same reaction :)

Merisi - It is a short story and available on-line at numerous sites (http://www.online-literature.com/willa-cather/1594/
OR http://www.classicreader.com/read.php/bookid.1017/sec./). I selected the story for students based solely upon the author and when I read it, the story seemed to speak to where I am in life right this minute. Then I had to try like hell not to cry when I taught it ;)
